Confessions of A Business Woman

I don’t know if “confessions” is really the right word to use here, maybe the title should be “The Why of a 40+ Business Woman” but that isn’t nearly as attention grabbing. What could I possibly be crazy enough to confess to in a blog that anyone can see? I DON’T KNOW HOW TO RUN …

Be Afraid Then Do It Anyway

Be Afraid……Then Do It Anyway

Fear is powerful.

Fear will keep you from doing what you love and discovering new things. We let fear get the best of us most of the time. I know I’m guilty of that more often than I care to admit. Once we let fear take over it’s hard to come back and defeat it in order to move forward with out lives.

Whether it be a fear of getting behind a wheel after you or someone you know has been in an accident, or never going on that vacation to the Grand Canyon with your friends/family because you have a fear of heights that you may not even know where it came from. Being afraid is a normal human instinct that we all posses. However, some of us learn to deal with it.

You see the people that are out and hang gliding and cliff diving and having this wonderful adventurous life that we just can’t understand because we’re afraid to get off of the couch and put ourselves out there. Those people are afraid too but they’ve learned to deal. They’ve learned to put the fear behind them in order to move forward with what they love. Everyone is afraid of something. I deal with fear on a daily basis. I hate, hate, HATE calling people I don’t know.

Want me to call and order pizza? Nope, I’m using an app for that. Want me to call and see if they have your favorite game at Game Stop? Nope, I’m going to bribe someone else to do that. How can I manage to be a Business Coach if I’m afraid of calling people?

I have to talk to people I don’t know and sell myself and my abilities on a daily basis. Very hard to do when you’re scared. So how do I do it? I’m afraid, but I do it anyway. I remember my first Coaching call. My hands were shaking so badly it was hard to write legibly. I couldn’t sit still so I was pacing during the call. I don’t think my client noticed because they hired my anyway, but I was terrified. Funny thing is each call was easier than the last.

I still get nervous calling a potential client for the first time. Will they like me? Will I like them? Does it make sense for us to do business together? Sometimes yes and sometimes no. Fear is not a bad thing, letting fear keep me from doing what I love is. What are you letting fear keep you from doing? What experiences are you missing out on because you’re afraid?

Write 3 things down that you are not doing because you are afraid and pick one. Just one. Then…..be afraid, but do it anyway.

Choices

Strong women take care of everyone but themselves.

We put the needs of others above our own. We are taught from an early age that we should sacrifice our happiness for the happiness of everyone around us because that’s what moms and wives do. And, I agree to a point.

Yes, we can put the needs of our families ahead of our own, but not to the extent we sacrifice ourselves. If we sacrifice our well-being for our significant others, our children, our parents, our employers and anyone else that calls and says “Could you do this for me?” where does that leave us? It leaves us feeling empty, taken for granted and feeling defeated.

When we as women get to this place we make choices that are not always the best. The end result we are hoping for may be good, but instead of facing our challenges head on and having the hard conversations we need to have, we choose the path of least conflict. In the end, this can result in more conflict.

So, before you give up, have the hard conversations, make the choices you need to make to have a healthier, happier life. Get rid of the toxic relationships, set boundaries for work, family and friends. If you don’t take care of you, you can’t take care of anyone else.
